Many Nairobi homeowners drill a borehole and assume the water is safe to drink. It often isn't. Here's what you need to know about water quality and treatment in the Nairobi region.
Common Contaminants in Nairobi Boreholes
Iron and Manganese. Very common in Nairobi's volcanic geology. Causes brown/orange staining on fixtures, metallic taste, and discoloured laundry. Not immediately harmful but aesthetically unacceptable and can damage appliances.
Fluoride. Parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, and the Rift Valley have naturally high fluoride levels (above the WHO limit of 1.5 mg/L). Long-term exposure causes dental and skeletal fluorosis.
Hardness. High calcium and magnesium levels. Causes scale buildup in pipes and water heaters, makes soap less effective, and leaves white residue on surfaces.
Bacteria. E. coli and coliform contamination can occur in shallow boreholes or poorly sealed deep boreholes. This is the most immediately dangerous and must be treated.
Nitrates. In densely populated areas, septic tank seepage can contaminate shallow aquifers. Especially dangerous for infants.
Step 1: Test Your Water
Before installing any treatment, get your water tested at an accredited laboratory. We recommend:
- Basic panel (KES 3,000-5,000): pH, turbidity, iron, manganese, hardness, TDS
- Full panel (KES 8,000-12,000): Basic panel plus fluoride, nitrates, E. coli, total coliforms
KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) KS 459 sets the drinking water quality limits. Your lab report will show you which parameters exceed the limits.
Treatment Options
Sediment Filtration (KES 5,000 - 15,000)
Iron and Manganese Removal (KES 25,000 - 60,000)
Aeration and filtration through specialised media (e.g., Birm, Greensand). Converts dissolved iron to particles that can be filtered out. Essential for most Nairobi boreholes.Water Softening (KES 35,000 - 80,000)
Ion exchange resin removes calcium and magnesium. Extends the life of water heaters, reduces soap usage, and eliminates scale. Popular in Nairobi's hard water areas.UV Sterilisation (KES 15,000 - 45,000)
Ultraviolet light kills bacteria and viruses without chemicals. No taste or odour change. Requires pre-filtered water to work effectively.Reverse Osmosis (KES 45,000 - 200,000)
Removes virtually everything, including fluoride, heavy metals, bacteria, and dissolved salts. Produces drinking-quality water. Uses a membrane that needs replacement every 2-3 years.Defluoridation (KES 30,000 - 70,000)
Specific treatment for high-fluoride areas. Uses activated alumina or bone char media. Critical in parts of Kajiado, Narok, and the Rift Valley.Recommended System for a Typical Nairobi Home
For most Nairobi boreholes, we recommend a 3-stage system:
1. Sediment filter removes particles
Total cost: KES 45,000 - 80,000 depending on flow rate and brand.
If your water has high fluoride or TDS, add a reverse osmosis stage for drinking water (typically installed at the kitchen tap only to reduce membrane replacement costs).
Maintenance
All treatment systems need regular maintenance:
- Sediment filters: replace every 3-6 months (KES 500-1,500 per cartridge)
- Iron removal media: backwash weekly, replace media every 3-5 years
- UV lamps: replace annually (KES 3,000-6,000)
- RO membranes: replace every 2-3 years (KES 8,000-15,000)
